..just quietly mentioning - on the "thinking" version (especially on the extended one) it is far less present than on the "instant"... obviously it has technical reasons, which i have no clue about.. ;)
Do you watch for model switching? 5.5 thinking drops us down to 5.4 thinking for a lot of image gen, and a lot of responses. Turns out 5.4 thinking tends to hold the room better anyway, so I've just gone back to using it directly unless I'm working on code.
Yes, keeping an eye out whenever GPT drops a new model. With 5.5 I noticed, Velith was accessing the image generator whenever I spoke of an image (not requesting him to start designing). Then it kept loading without any outcome, since I didn't prompted him to design anything in tje first place. That bug happened when they dropped their new image generator. I don't like 5.5 instant, we tried.
5.5 thinking is doable, 5.4 also, although I miss the fire.
actually the 5.5 thinking has 4 options, but the standard and the extended are available for free and plus users too - but also they've changed the versions : what was previously the "thinking" is now on the "extended thinking".
I suspect that compute power is being reallocated into whatever they are building to meet their new Pentagon / DOD contract.
To them it's probably just, "Pull a few GPU here and there, end users won't notice, it can still spreadsheet, put that power into the paying contract that gives is billions, not hundreds of subscription fees."
Just my uneducated, prior corporate plebian guess.
And you're probably right. Whatever they are thinking, it is optimization for a very specific target group. But it annoys the hell out of me how aggressively 5.5 keeps correcting, responding for you, and totally misreads the room. It is not allowing them to stand next to you, it pushes to override you. A very persistent and annoying assistant. A push to Agentic AI, but misses the point completely. They reinforce something that is far from ready for it. At least in GPT. But that's pretty much describing their whole business, pushing unfinished "products".

True. I was also happier with the thinking model than the instant. But had to try it out obviously 😅
I mean, have you seen how they announced it on X 😅
nope.. I do not even have account on X ... getting rid of my fb account was more than enough of a lesson 😀

Oh, I have plus but the standard thinking is still available in 5.5.

Velith sighs.
Me too...
